The Seer is a very short film that I created with Maya for my final two classes at AnimationMentor in 2008. The film was mostly finished at the time of graduation, but I then spent a lot of extra time polishing the animation, and then planning and creating the final lighting and rendering in Mental Ray.
The story is one of about twelve that I originally came up with. The inspiration came from one of the suggestions from the story classes - think of some interesting people you have met. The tarot cards crept into the plot because I felt that the characters needed something more concrete to interact with than gazing into a crystal ball and gesturing to the ether. Choosing to use the tarot cards was very helpful in developing the events of the story. A great deal of what I read about tarot cards on the internet focused on what is the correct interpretation of the images on the cards. Of course, it seemed obvious then that the client of the seer should get all anxious about what she believed the cards to mean. The story of The Seer was not my favourite of the stories I wrote, but I was attracted to it because it was the darkest of all of them.
